Leaf Privacy Policy
Last Updated: December 6, 2024
Leaf is designed with your privacy as a core principle. This privacy policy explains how Leaf handles your data. The short version: your reading data stays on your device and is never sent to our servers.
Data We Don't Collect
Leaf does not collect, store, or transmit any of your personal data to our servers. Specifically, we do not collect:
- The books you read or add to your library
- Your reading sessions, times, or habits
- Your reading goals, streaks, or statistics
- Quotes or notes you save
- Your collections or organizational preferences
- Any usage analytics or telemetry
- Device identifiers or fingerprints
- Location data
Local Data Storage
All your data in Leaf is stored locally on your device using Apple's SwiftData framework. This includes:
- Your book library and reading progress
- Reading session history and statistics
- Goals, streaks, and achievements
- Saved quotes and notes
- Custom collections and preferences
- Theme and display settings
This data never leaves your device unless you explicitly enable iCloud sync.
iCloud Sync
If you enable iCloud sync, your Leaf data is synchronized across your Apple devices using Apple's CloudKit service. This synchronization is:
- End-to-end encrypted: Data is encrypted before it leaves your device
- Controlled by Apple: We have no access to your iCloud data
- Private to you: Only your Apple ID can access your synced data
- Optional: You can disable sync at any time in Settings
Quiet Forge cannot read, access, or retrieve any data stored in your iCloud account. For more information about iCloud security, visit Apple's iCloud security overview.
Sign in with Apple
Leaf supports Sign in with Apple for authentication. When you use this feature:
- Apple handles the authentication process entirely
- We receive only a unique, anonymous identifier from Apple
- We never receive your email address, name, or Apple ID password
- You can use Apple's email hiding feature for additional privacy
Book Information Lookup
When you add books by ISBN scanning or searching, Leaf queries the Open Library API to retrieve book metadata (title, author, cover image, page count). These queries:
- Are made directly to Open Library, not through our servers
- Contain only the ISBN or search terms you enter
- Do not include any personal identifiers or device information
- Are not logged or tracked by Quiet Forge
Open Library is operated by the Internet Archive. You can review their privacy policy at archive.org/about/terms.php.
Camera Access
Leaf requests camera access for ISBN barcode scanning and quote capture (OCR). Camera access is used only for these specific features. Images are processed locally on your device and are never uploaded or stored beyond the immediate task. You can revoke camera access at any time in your device Settings.
No Third-Party Tracking
Leaf does not integrate any third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking services. We do not use:
- Google Analytics or Firebase
- Facebook SDK or Meta Pixel
- Crash reporting services that collect user data
- Attribution or marketing analytics tools
- Any advertising networks or ad SDKs
Data Export & Deletion
You maintain full control over your data:
- Export: You can export your reading data to CSV format at any time from Settings
- Delete: Uninstalling the app removes all local data from your device
- iCloud Data: If using iCloud sync, you can delete synced data from iCloud settings
Since we don't store any of your data on our servers, there's nothing for us to delete.
Children's Privacy
Leaf does not collect personal information from anyone, including children. Since all data is stored locally on the device and we have no access to it, Leaf is safe for users of all ages.
Changes to This Policy
If we update this privacy policy, we will post the changes here and update the "Last Updated" date. We encourage you to review this policy periodically. Continued use of Leaf after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
